Call for Artists!

What’s the gist of the project?
An important part of TEDxHG’s mission is to spur meaningful connection among people or groups who may rarely, if ever, interact. To support and illustrate this goal, we're launching an arts project that throws unlikely collaborators together and challenges them to CREATE something wonderful together!

A unique, magical alchemy will take place, birthing works of art that offer insightful, surprising perspectives.

At least six artist teams (collectively, involving 12+ artists) will each be challenged to create a 5-minute video piece around a mood or theme. You’ll have 5 weeks to provide a final video. We know that’s tight, but it’s part of the challenge! Videos submitted before the deadline will be debuted during our live virtual conference in April, and artist participants will be our VIP guests during the livestream experience.

We aren’t allowed to pay performers and speakers to participate, but the global TEDx platform comes with high esteem.

Wait, isn’t TEDx all about talks? Will each team need to give a talk to accompany the art?
No—in fact, we don’t want this. TEDx events typically incorporate artistic performances into their programs. The relatively abstract vessel of artistic expression helps to take the audience on a deep, impactful journey through mental and emotional landscapes.

Who is eligible?
We are looking for artists who like to play outside of their comfort zones with other creatives! We’re open to any medium, so this includes but is not limited to...

Singers 🔸 Songwriters 🔸 Rap Artists 🔸 Dancers 🔸 Choreographers 🔸 Musicians 🔸 Composers 🔸 Filmmakers 🔸 Sound/Video Editors 🔸 Animators 🔸 Sculptors 🔸 Painters 🔸 Circus Arts Performers 🔸 Designers 🔸 Directors 🔸 Playwrights 🔸 Actors 🔸 Poets 🔸 Photographers

Process + Timeline

How and when will the teams be formed?
Submit your application [CLICK HERE] by noon on Saturday, Feb 13. Don’t worry, it’s easy! The form will walk you through the following steps.

1️⃣ Relay basic info such as your name, medium, where you live, etc.

2️⃣ Acknowledge that you understand and agree to terms and guidelines.

3️⃣ Provide links to examples of your work, appropriate for your medium—an official website, Spotify page, YouTube or Vimeo videos, etc.

4️⃣ Write a short paragraph telling us why you would make a great collaborative artist for the TEDxHeritageGreen Performers Project.

Email notifications will go out by Sunday evening, February 21, to announce the teams and share project parameters and schedules. Your fellow collaborators may be down the street…. or on the other side of the globe!

At that point, we’ll ask artists accepted into the project to (a) provide bios and headshots for marketing purposes and (b) officially agree to the terms and conditions (outlined in “FAQs + Fine Print below and detailed in the application form).

How will the creative process flow?
You’re welcome to reach out to your teammates after receiving the notification email, but the official kickoff will be a Zoom call the week of Feb 22nd. During this meeting you’ll receive themes, comprehensive information, an opportunity to ask questions in a group setting, and time to brainstorm with your teammates in a private breakout session.

Over a five-week period, individual teams will continue to ideate, create, record, compile, and finalize their work with the help of TEDxHG volunteer staff and other professionals. This work will take place virtually and/or in physical spaces that allow for social distancing. Flexibility is key! And, obviously, you’ll be expected to play well with others.

What is TED and TEDx?
TED is a global nonprofit organization devoted to ideas worth spreading. It began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost almost any topic you can imagine. TEDx is a licensing program in which TED-like presentations are shared with local communities around the world. Each TEDx organization is unique, developing and executing their events independently.

Performances within TED and TEDx events sustain and support audience experience in a different way than talks. The abstract nature of artistic expression can energize… soothe… and open hearts and minds.

Tell me more about TEDxHeritageGreen.
TEDxHG derives its name and spirit from a long-established public resource in the heart of Greenville, SC—Heritage Green, a cultural campus that is a vibrant place of discovery, inspiration, creativity, and entertainment for Greenville County residents and visitors of all ages and walks of life.

Our new TEDx organization was born out of a desire to spark epiphanies in individuals and to aid understanding, empathy, and engagement among diverse groups of people—especially those who rarely, if ever, come together as equals in a psychologically safe environment. TEDxHG favors an edgy, direct, status-quo-busting, assertive-yet-respectful approach.

Sounds cool, but didn’t you mention fine print?
The application form will take you through the details, but, in general, we just want to be transparent about…

🔆 the process itself, especially the time frames and deadlines; and
🔆 content, copyright, and distribution parameters required by TED and TEDx.
